Medical Courier Driver Certification Requirements

Published May 15, 2026 · Rav3n Logistics

Every medical courier driver carries a stack of certifications — and one expired card can disqualify them from a route or, worse, cost you the contract. Here's the full list, what each one covers, and how to track them.

HIPAA Training

Every driver handling PHI needs documented HIPAA training, refreshed annually. Many states require a signed acknowledgement on file.

Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) Training

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 — required for any driver who may come into contact with blood or body fluids. Renewed annually. Includes PPE use and spill response.

DEA Compliance (Controlled Substances)

If you transport Schedule II–V drugs, the driver and the company must comply with DEA chain-of-custody and security requirements. The DEA registration belongs to the company; driver training is internal.

Hazmat (Limited Quantity)

Many lab specimens qualify as UN3373 Category B biological substances — requires basic hazmat training under 49 CFR. Renewed every 3 years.

Chain of Custody

Not federally mandated, but every hospital and lab contract will require documented training in handoff procedures, package integrity, and evidence-handling.

State Endorsements

Check your state. Some require courier-specific endorsements for medical transport, especially for organ or tissue logistics.

How to Track Them All

Spreadsheets fail because expirations creep up. Use dispatch software with built-in driver certification tracking— alerts 30 days before expiry, hard-block on unqualified dispatches, and an exportable audit log when clients ask.
